Timeless Communication: Teachings from the Pyramids

Isn’t it fascinating that for over 4,500 years, the Pyramids have been telling the stories of Pharaohs, of their quest for power, of eternity? That’s why I think there are 3 fundamental lessons on communication we can learn from them.

As a communications expert, I often wonder: how can we create messages that last? How can we make sure that our words, our stories, and our vision, leave a legacy? I think the Pyramids offer three key lessons on communication that are just as relevant today as they were in ancient Egypt. Let me share them with you.

Teaching 1: the Pyramids serve a clear vision.

They were built to ensure the Pharaoh’s safe passage into the afterlife. Their shape, with triangular sides pointing towards the sky, symbolised the rays of the sun, representing the Pharaoh’s ascent to the gods. Just like the Pyramids, every communication needs a clear purpose. Without one, your message becomes lost in the noise.

In business, whether you’rec launching a product or delivering a message, it’s essential to define your “why”. Starting with why is a concept developed by Simon Sinek – I highly recommend you check out his book or his Ted Talk by the way. It allows your message to stand the test of time, and leave a mark.

Teaching 2: audience-centered communication.

The Pyramids weren’t just built for the Pharaoh’s personal glory—they were designed with the afterlife in mind, serving the Pharaoh’s entourage, both divine and mortal. They were a proper communication tool, designed to reach people in the long term.

Your message should always be designed with your audience in mind. When creating content, think about who will receive it, what their challenges are, how they will understand it, and what your call to action is. The Pyramids teach us that impactful communication is about connecting with your audience’s needs, emotions, both anticipating and exceeding their expectations.

Teaching 3: the magic of storytelling.

The Pyramids themselves are just a grain of sand in the desert of a much larger story—the story of ancient Egyptians, their advanced knowledge, and their belief in the afterlife. It’s not just a construction—it’s a narrative. The way the Pyramids were constructed, their purpose, and their alignment, notably with the stars in Orion’s Belt and Sirius, portray a vivid story.

Storytelling is the foundation of all great communication. Whether it’s through brand narratives or personal anecdotes, people remember stories. Stories activate emotions, which strengthen memory, making the content more vivid and lasting. I believe that these three lessons matter today more than ever.

The Pyramids, with all the mystery they retain and the fascination they exert, are a testament to the power and legacy of purposeful communication. It’s about building with intention, staying true to your vision, and you’ll create something meaningful that stands the test of time.
